In the final days of our holiday in Europe I found this great shop called Castellum in Vianden in the mountains of Luxembourg. (We hadn’t planned on visiting Luxembourg, but we are big believers in “making it up as you go along”, so armed with our hire car, our GPS that we bought from home and a few tourist brochures, we deviated from the top of France on the recommendation of a guy in a tourist information centre in Rodemack, in the province of Lorraine to visit the area of Luxembourg known as Petit Switzerland.)
Vianden is awesome and the location of the Chateau du Vianden which was the site of a Roman fortification in the mid 300s!!!! It was added to, etc over the centuries and reached its heyday in the 1600s and 1700s. After falling into disrepair it was restored in the 1970s and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. If you are into castles, put this on your “must see” list.
Anyway, everywhere we stop I always scout out fabric/craft/vintage stores to see what I can find. Today I found “Castellum” as we walked up to tour the castle. It is a great little store run by a mother and daughter team. They sell quilting fabrics, a range of items that they have made (bags, quilts, aprons) and a great selection of giftware. They also teach quilting and patchwork on a couple of the tables in the shop. There were some lovely fabrics but I only purchased one piece as I had decided that if I was going to carry it all the way home I had to really love it and it had to be quite different from anything else I had seen. I bought three metres of the piece shown which is adorned with foxes, squirrels, birds, trees and owls!!! It is a heavy weight cotton blend…..not sure what it will become, still pondering on that one!!
I was thrilled to find more people on the other side of the world who are passionate about textiles.
