Simply Sewn - the best workshop for garment basics

SIMPLY SEWN

This workshop is spread over two Thursday evening sessions: Thursday 24 October 6:30 – 9:15pm and Thursday 31 October 6:30 – 9:15pm.

If you book for this workshop then you are booking to come along to both evening sessions. The one fee covers both sessions.

You’ve seen the Instagram and Facebook photos – now, let’s make this top!

Within just a single (dress) pattern, there are endless permutations through the variables of fabric, be it fibre content, colour, or print. The resulting garment is unique and acts to place a stamp of individuality in a uniform world: it is a display of a person’s skill as well as their taste.

Handmade has an authenticity, where each choice is deliberate, from how cloth is cut to the colour of thread. In this way a bespoke garment becomes a truly reflective canvas.

Sonya Philip, of 100 Acts of Sewing

Simply Sewn Top #9I have been sewing almost for as long as I can remember. My mum was a dressmaker and I jokingly say that “I grew up in a sewing room”. At the age of 85, my mother is still a very competent and accurate seamstress…I had a great teacher!! I guess I learnt a lot of what I know initially by osmosis…by just being in the sewing room, watching her and listening to conversations.

However as I grew old enough to sew my own clothes, I began to experiment for myself, playing, altering patterns, changing detailing, swapping in sleeves, bodices or collars from other patterns, generally having fun and making mistakes (and embracing them) and learning lots along the way!!! I enjoyed putting my own stamp on the garments I made!!

Over the years however, I have ended up with a few favourite patterns that I tend to use over and over. There is endless variety available simply by changing the type of fabric, the colour, the shape of a sleeve, the line of a skirt, etc.

I still get a real thrill out of making my own garments…it’s a combination of the fun of the actual sewing and then the joy of wearing something that you have make for yourself…something that fits well, suits your colouring and reflects your style and your personality.

I truly want others to share that same sense of joy that comes with making your own simple clothes……I want to help people explore the basics of simple garment construction so that they can confidently start to make their own clothes.

My motivation:

  • To help people escape from the cycle of fast fashion…by sewing for yourself, you gain a much greater appreciation of the true value of clothes
  • To help give people confidence to develop their own wardrobe by mastering some basics of sewing
  • To encourage people to experiment with fabrics, textures, prints and colours…..to express themselves creatively through what they wear!!
  • To start conversations about using up your stash of fabric rather than constantly adding to it
  • To help people learn how to recycle favourite garments by reusing fabrics in fun and clever ways

Simply Sewn Top #6How will it work?

  • We’ll start with a simple top pattern.
  • We’ll help you find your fit.
  • We’ll start to play and experiment with fabrics, styling and detailing.
  • We’ll get sewing, building confidence as we go!!
