Empire Lampshades
10am Friday 8 May

Friday 8 May 2020 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

$25.00 – $125.00
Empire Lampshade with Jaipur Ruby fabric

We are thrilled to be launching our “Empires Only” lampshade workshop!

We have plenty of requests for a workshop that teaches how to make a tapered shade (we call them empires). So here it is! You are invited to join us … from the comfort of your own home, let your hands play and your heart sing!!

Get the Ministry of Handmade advantage! We use the same techniques that the professional lampshade makers use . . . no sewing, no glueing !

Create your own professional standard empire lampshade from scratch. Using fabric of your choice, make a new décor item that will be the hero of a room at your place or co-ordinate with existing furnishings.

Instructor: Julie

Time: Approximately 2 hours

  • $25 for the workshop only (you already have a kit or the required lampshade making materials)
  • $10 for the workshop + cost of lampshade kit

Kits are added at our normal kit price + flat rate shipping to anywhere in Australia for $15. You can also choose to pick up your kit from Ministry of Handmade.

You can choose any kit from this extensive range:

  • Empire shade sizes – 13/18cm, 15/20cm, 15/25cm, 20/25cm, 20/30cm, 25/35cm, 30/40cm, 35/45cm, 35/50cm and 40/50cm

Lampshade sizes are described by the diameter of the top ring and the diameter of the bottom ring. So a 30/40cm empire shade has a 30cm diameter top ring and a 40cm diameter bottom ring.

Minimum fabric requirements for empire lampshades:

  • 13/18cm – 40cm x 70cm wide
  • 15/20cm – 40cm x 70cm wide
  • 15/25cm – 40cm x 80cm wide
  • 20/25cm – 40cm x 90cm wide
  • 20/30cm – 45cm x 100cm wide
  • 25/35cm – 45cm x 110cm wide
  • 30/40cm – 50cm x 130cm wide
  • 35/45cm – 55cm x 140cm wide*
  • 35/50cm – 60cm x 155cm wide*
  • 40/50cm – 60cm x 160cm wide*

*As most fabric is less than 140cm wide, please allow fabric to be cut down the roll for these larger shades. Alternatively, choose a fabric that does not have a distinct pattern (that would work well in any orientation) and you can angle the design diagonally across the fabric.

Note: Extra fabric may be required for pattern placement if you are keen to have a particular part of the fabric facing the front of the shade.

Fabric selection: Light to medium weight cotton, linen, cotton drill, polyester cotton. Fabrics with very loose weave or coarse or uneven grain or texture are not really suitable

Fabric may be purchased from Ministry of Handmade ahead of time from our shop.
