Top Stitching Tip!

I’ll happily admit that I am addicted to top stitching. It can make such a difference to the finished look of a project. I am working on an ottoman (using a fabulous retro design from Social Fabric) and wanted to top stitch in black to match the colours in the fabric and the black hairpin legs that it will have.

I’m not a big fan of heavy threads as they often don’t feed through the machine successfully. Also they can be expensive to buy, especially if you only need a small amount. My very easy solution is to sew with two reels of regular sewing thread. Most sewing machine have two spool holders, so just put one spool on each and then thread as normal pretending your double thread is just one thread. I usually thread the needle one thread at a time. The bobbin thread stays unchanged… just one thread.

This technique gives a nice more obvious top stitched look that is perfect for heavier fabrics like denim and upholstery materials. This is always my “go to” technique for re-hemming jeans.
