The delightful Gillian Bell came for a private sewing lesson with me last week. My mission – to teach her how to sew fabric liners for her picnic baskets.
Gillian runs a unique business called Swallows and Amazons Vintage-Style Picnics. She packs baskets, just like this one, with all sorts of home-baked (by her) English style picnic fare like:
- fennel and leek soup
- beef and guinness pies
- confit tomato and shallot savoury pies
- sticky buns
- ginger cake
- jammy dodgers
Yum! You can choose to wash these delights down with all manner of drinks, including homemade icy elderflower cordial or a flask of English Breakfast tea.
We had a lovely morning. I showed Gillian how to measure the basket, cut the fabric, attach the fusible fleece liner, mitre the corners, attach the tapes and lining and then finish it off.
This basket looks a bit empty in my photo, but I can just imagine it, full to overflowing with Gillian’s lovingly prepared treats!
